Wednesday, 10 September 2008On the 20th of August, Senator Bob McMullen, the Parliamentary Secretary for AusAID, visited SPH.
Senator McMullen came to the School to discuss the newly-formed Pacific Malaria Initiative (PacMI) Support Centre. The meeting, hosted by Centre director, Dr Andrew Vallely, included SPH Head of School Professor Alan Lopez, School Manager Helen Keown, Professor Dennis Shanks and Lt Col Robert Cooper from the Australian Army Malaria Institute (AMI) and Associate Professor James McCarthy from QIMR. The group then went onto AMI to tour the centre.
The meeting focused on initial PacMI progress in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. Senator McMullen was extremely interested in the team’s work and opinions, especially on the importance of maintaining vigilance in populations once malaria has been eliminated.
PacMI is a $25 million AusAID scheme funding health systems and research into prevention and treatment. The Solomon Islands has the highest incidence of malaria in the Pacific.
