Biography:

Wayne Hall was formerly Director of the Office of Public Policy and Ethics at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience (2001-2005) and Director of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at the University of NSW (1994-2001). He has been an expert adviser to the World Health Organization since 1993, advising on: the health effects of cannabis use; the effectiveness of drug substitution treatment; the scientific quality of the evaluation of the Swiss heroin trials; the contribution of illicit drug use to the global burden of disease; vaccines against drug addiction; and the ethical implications of neuroscience research on addiction. In 2003 he was identified by the Institute for Scientific Analysis as a “Highly Cited Author” with a rate of citation in the top “one half of one percent of all publishing researchers in the last two decades” in “social science, general”. He is currently researching the policy and ethical implications of: research on the neurobiology of nicotine dependence, biological interventions that purport to extend human life expectancy, and pharmacological treatments of mental and behavioural disorders.
