Professor Neville Owen joins American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education

Friday, 23 October 2009

The American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education (AAKPE) has announced the recent induction of its newest members at a ceremony held in early October in San Diego, California. Professor Neville Owen, Director of School of Population Health's Cancer Prevention Research Centre, was named as one of two International Fellows of AAKPE.

Membership into the Academy signifies the top individuals in the fields of Kinesiology and Physical Education, who have demonstrated significant contributions to the field for at least 10 years. These include contributions to the scholarly and professional literature and leadership activities in professional associations.

Professor Owen is delighted about the opportunity to join this elite academy, which strongly represents the basic science that underpins his own research field.

“As a behavioural researcher who works on chronic-disease prevention and the health of populations, to be welcomed as a peer by these eminent people in exercise science is a great honour for me,” he said.

“I'm particularly pleased that research on physical activity and public health is now recognised as a strong mainstream area of exercise science.

His induction into the AAKPE reflects positively on the talent and productivity of SPH’s Cancer Prevention Research Centre and their network of close collaborators, Professor Owen believes.

“Our collective body of work is recognised internationally for its innovative approaches to understanding the negative health consequences of physical inactivity and prolonged sitting, and the crucial role of behaviour in chronic-disease prevention.”
